This is the village in Jagalur taluk with a population of around 1200 and is close to a major town in the central Karnatala namely Davanagare. There are about 225 houses and the composition of the villages caste wise is as follows:

World Bank-Agriculture Specialist Dr. Paul Singh Sidhu Tour Plan

Agriculture Marketing

The project under the subcomponent Agriculture and Horticulture Development has successfully demonstrated the crop production technologies both in Agriculture and Horticulture crops. Apart from increasing the productivity utilizing the available water the project has taken steps to create visibility for successful agriculture and horticulture interventions. Some of the steps that have been initiated are

1. Line department linkage workshops:
The departmental linkages with the Tank Management Institutions will go a long way in ensuring the stability of these community based organizations. The departments such as Agriculture, Horticulture, Sericulture, Fisheries, Social Forestry, Women and Child Welfare, Social Welfare, Minor Irrigation, Health, Cooperation, State warehousing corporation and lead banks were invited for this workshop under the chairmanship of Deputy Commissioner and the compendium was prepared which included the department programmes available for the use of members belonging Tank Management Institutions. Similarly the directory of TMI’s was prepared and circulated to participating line departments. So far the linkage workshops have been conducted in the District Project Units of Haveri, Raichur, Koppal, Bellary and Bagalkot. . In the same forum the discussion for forming federation of TMI’s were also held to take up activities connected with marketing and other related activities to agribusiness.

2. Exhibitions:
JSYS has been participating in number of exhibitions conducted for attracting the target groups for better dissemination of project achievements. JSYS facilitated the participation of the TMI’s in these exhibitions where the commodity samples, silt samples and agriculture technologies introduced in the project and various publications were exhibited.

3. Internal Quality Manual:
The internal quality manual for the organic production is designed which acts as a basic document for maintaining quality of the organic farm and based on which the certification agencies issue organic certification.

4. Integrated Project on Medicinal/Aromatic plants:
The project realizing the global demand for the medicinal and aromatic plants, has taken steps to build the capacity of the farmers by taking up the model demonstrations where they will trained in the cultivation of medicinal plants. The project report has been prepared in consultation with department of horticulture, Biocentre, National Medicinal Plants Board and Department of AYUSH. The EC has suggested to increase the number of demonstrations to create greater impact. Currently the project is working on preparing the comprehensive report in collaboration with the Department of Horticulture.
5. National Level Workshop on Vegetable crops:
A National Level Seminar for two days was organized covering vegetable crops on 2-3, March 2009 in collaboration with National Horticulture Research and Development Foundation, University of Agriculture Sciences, Bangalore, Krishi Vegyan Kendra, Babbur, Department of Horticulture. The programme was conducted under National Horticulture Mission. In two days seminar farmers had the opportunity to listen expert lectures on Production, Processing and Marketing were arranged. The panel experts were drawn from Indian Institute of Horticulture Research, Bangalore, University of Agriculture Sciences, Bangalore, Department of Horticulture, Successful NGO activists. The programme also included exhibitions, exposure visits to the various activities carried out by KVK Babbur. About 80 TMI representatives from 9 districts of JSYS participated in the programme. This provided a good opportunity for networking.

6. Food Safety and Organic Certification:
The project is laying a greater emphasis on food safety aspects. Negotiations are under way with various certification agencies such as British Standards Consortium and Indian Standards Bureau to work out training programmes for building the capacities of TMI covering food safety aspects. The project is making a special drive creating awareness on safe food using innovative media options like blogs and e-mail campaigns and through meetings of Knowledge Management Forum. “Sanjeeveeni” is a new branded shop facilitated by JSYS in promoting the organic foods (fruits and vegetables) which has been set up in N. Vaddalli and is a certified shop.

7. Exposure trips to staff:
As a part of the JSYS staff training, exposures visits were arranged to Organic Outlet in Yamakaranmardi (Belgaum) and hitech farm (Belgaum). Similarly exposure trip for the staff training participants was organized to Safal and Sanjeevini outlet of JSYS.

8. Directory of Pomegranate Growers:
The Kalasakoppa tank is one of the biggest among the tanks chosen in the district of Bagalkot. To develop marketing linkage a directory of pomegranate growers is published on the internet using a popular web publishing tool called blog.

8. Risk Mitigation and Agriculture Price Information:

All the DPU’s have been provided with information on “Raitha Sanjeeveeni” an insurance plan designed for the farmers. Also the information on Pledge loans and information (booklets) on APMC offices located in different taluks have been provided to DPU to help them establish linkage with the Agriculture Produce Marketing Committee.

11. Hand book on Good Marketing Methods:
In the project tanks cereals, pulses, flowers, fruits and vegetables are cultivated. The post harvest losses before the product reaches the wholesalers play a significant role in reducing the farm income. Hence a hand book in Kannada Language has been prepared for the use of TMI’s. The hand book covers good methods pertaining to cereals, pulses, flowers, fruits and vegetables, export procedures, e-marketing and highlights model agriculture marketing law.
